Molasses is a beneficial organic supplement for cannabis plants, primarily by feeding the beneficial microbes in the soil rather than feeding the plant directly. These microorganisms, in turn, help improve soil health and increase the bioavailability of nutrients to the plant. For best results, it is critical to use unsulphured blackstrap molasses.
Why use molasses for cannabis plants?
- Feeds beneficial soil microbes: Molasses is rich in carbohydrates (sugars), which are a food source for the microorganisms living in the soil. These microbes break down nutrients into a form that plants can easily absorb.
- Provides nutrients: Blackstrap molasses contains a variety of essential nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. It also has trace minerals and some B vitamins that contribute to overall plant health.
- Helps prevent salt buildup: Regular use of synthetic fertilizers can cause a buildup of salts in the soil. Molasses can help reduce this accumulation and the resulting nutrient lockout by supporting a healthy soil ecosystem.
May deter pests: When applied as a foliar spray, the sticky properties of molasses can trap or repel soft-bodied insects like aphids and whiteflies. Its strong scent can also deter certain pests, and it supports a healthy soil environment that is naturally more resistant to disease.Enhances flavor and aroma: Many growers believe using molasses in the later stages of flowering can improve the flavor and aroma of the finished buds, though this claim is anecdotally based rather than scientifically proven.
The right type of molasses to use
When feeding cannabis plants, you must use unsulphured blackstrap molasses.
- Unsulphured: This means no sulfur dioxide, a preservative that can kill the very soil microbes you are trying to feed.
- Blackstrap: This is the most nutrient-dense version of molasses, as it comes from the third boiling of sugar cane syrup and has the highest concentration of minerals.
How to use molasses for cannabis plants
Molasses is most often applied as part of a watering regimen or added to compost tea.
Mixing with water
- Preparation: Warm the water slightly to help the thick molasses dissolve completely.
- Ratio: Mix 1 to 3 tablespoons of unsulphured blackstrap molasses per gallon of lukewarm water. Start with a lower dose and increase gradually.
- Application: Water your cannabis plants with this solution.
- Frequency: Apply once every 1–2 weeks during the vegetative stage and more frequently (up to twice a week) during the flowering phase.
Mixing with compost tea
- Recipe: Add one tablespoon of molasses per gallon of water to your compost tea mix.
- Benefit: The molasses will provide carbohydrates that help the beneficial bacteria and fungi in the tea multiply, creating a microbial boost for your soil.
For a final flush
Some growers use molasses during the final weeks before harvest to "flush" the soil, believing it enhances the flavor. Simply use a solution of 1–2 tablespoons per gallon of water in the final weeks.
Potential drawbacks
- Attracting pests: Outdoors, the sugary smell of molasses can attract unwanted insects and other animals. Use precautions to protect your crop.
- Nutrient burn: As with any fertilizer, overfeeding with molasses can cause nutrient burn. If you see signs of leaf tip burn, reduce the dosage.
- Not for all systems: Molasses is not recommended for hydroponic systems with a sterile reservoir, as it can cause bacterial growth and clog lines.
